What Is a Distribution Transformer
A distribution transformer, commonly abbreviated as “distribution transformer,” refers to a stationary electrical device in a power distribution system that converts alternating current (AC) voltage and current based on the law of electromagnetic induction to transmit AC power. In some regions, power transformers with voltage ratings below 35 kilovolts (mostly 10 kV and below) are referred to as “distribution transformers,” abbreviated as “distribution transformer.” The facilities where these “distribution transformers” are installed are known as substations.
Development History
With the continuous advancement of China’s “energy conservation and consumption reduction” policies, the state encourages the development of energy-efficient, low-noise, and intelligent distribution transformer products. Chenghe Electric Power Company has also responded to the national call by vigorously producing mainstream energy-efficient distribution transformers. Currently, Chenghe’s best-selling products include two main types: energy-efficient oil-immersed transformers and amorphous alloy transformers. Whether in terms of energy conservation or technical capabilities, China’s transformer industry is poised to take the lead in global transformer development. More importantly, transformer energy efficiency is not merely reflected in the loss values specified at the time of manufacture. The establishment of a full lifecycle management model by users enables more effective economic operation and management of transformers, thereby maximizing the energy-saving value of the products and realizing the true benefits of transformer energy efficiency.
Core Function: Voltage Transformation
The primary job is to lower voltage while correspondingly increasing current (keeping power roughly constant) to make it suitable for local distribution. They operate continuously at or near full load and are designed for maximum efficiency at typical operating levels.
Key Features & Applications
10 kV and 35 kV S11, S13, S20, and S22 series distribution transformers, with a capacity range of 30–3,150 kVA; the core is a three-phase, three-column design with a multi-stage stepped cylindrical configuration;the windings utilize co-winding technology, ensuring good concentricity and strong short-circuit resistance; key technical indicators meet the advanced domestic standards for similar products.
Location: Mounted on poles (pole-mounted) for overhead lines or in ground-level enclosures (pad-mounted) in residential and commercial areas.
Rating: Typically range from 16 kVA to 100 kVA for standard distribution.
Design: Generally smaller and less expensive than large power transformers used in transmission substations.
How It Works
The transformer works on the principle of electromagnetic induction:
High-voltage current flows into the primary winding.
It creates a changing magnetic field in the core.
This field induces a lower-voltage current in the secondary winding.
The turn ratio between windings (N₁:N₂) determines the voltage step-down ratio.
Common Types
Pole-Mounted: Common in overhead distribution systems.
Pad-Mounted: Used in underground cable systems, often seen in urban/suburban neighborhoods.
Single-Phase vs. Three-Phase: Single-phase is standard for residential service, while three-phase serves industrial/commercial loads.
Operation and Maintenance
1. Overload Operation of Distribution Transformers
2. Abnormal Noises in Distribution Transformers
3. Temperature Inspection of Distribution Transformers
4. Check whether the oil level of the distribution transformer is normal, and inspect for oil seepage, leakage, or abnormal oil color
5. Inspect the distribution transformer’s insulating bushings for damage, cracks, or signs of arcing
6. Periodic Cleaning of Distribution Transformers
Safety & Reliability
These transformers are filled with oil for insulation and cooling. They are equipped with protective devices like fuses or circuit breakers to isolate them during faults, preventing damage to the grid and ensuring public safety.
